According to BBC Caribbean, a controversial move by the government in St. Lucia to privatize the loss-making Water and Sewage Company-Wasco- has been stalled, as the administration of Prime Minister Stephenson King considers a possible legal challenge from one of two international companies in the privatization bidding.
The government says it will look into receiving legal advice on the matter. Up to late last year, Suez had been heavily tipped to be awarded the contract.
In the last few days, after the Minister returned from a trip to the UK, Cascal (100% owned subsidiary of Biwater) seems to have gotten the nod.
On hearing this, at least one bidder (Suez) threatened legal action, claiming that Cascal had submitted its bid after the closing date.
Last Wednesday workers at WASCO (represented by the St Lucia CSA and the NWU (PSI's affiliates in St Lucia) were on "go slow". They are in the dark and want to know what is happening.
It is also reported that some banks and business places are refusing loans and credit to WASCO employees.
This is a very high risk!!
Water needs to be declare a Right, a human right, any person should have access to water, no matter!!
